1.4" AMOLED, perfect for wearables
As with anything moving through the product lifecycle, once a product has shown its popularity, competitors move in to get a piece of the market, driving the price down making it more accessible. This trend will continue as we see the number of manufacturers who have the capability to produce AMOLEDs increase, along with better efficiency and volume shipments helping the end user, in particular, those who want to try a newer technology in an existing application or who are developing a brand new prototype.
When considering a digital display, a question of which technology to go with is always a common question. Whether you are an entrepreneur looking for a display solution or a manufacturer looking into new technologies, having access to AMOLED displays isn’t just for the big corporations with deep pockets.
When applied to the wearable market, AMOLEDs offer tremendous benefits. Smartwatches, for example, are a booming trend within this market. It is projected to globally “grow at a compound annual rate of 35% over the next five years, reaching 148 million units shipped annually in 2019” according to Business Insider. Furthermore, particular technological strides made by larger corporations have made it possible for smaller manufacturers to build on their R&D and success, causing the decreased cost in manufacturing, where AMOLEDs will be soon competitively priced with their LCD counterparts*.
When you look at the tech specs, AMOLED’s distinct advantage lies with its increased energy efficiency and thinner profile, applied to mobile and wearable applications. The idea behind this being that it requires no backlight like that of its LCD counterpart which consumes the majority of the energy allocated to the display. Another advantage is the presentation of true blacks. When the color black is depicted, rather than having a pixel illuminated, the pixel is absent of light. An excellent way to optimize energy consumption is to design a graphic user interface that uses black as a background.
From an industrial design standpoint, a significant advantage of an AMOLED is its narrow bezel. The bezel is the space between the active area and the outside dimension. For an AMOLED, the bezel size is less than that of alternative displays of similar size. A great advantage of having no backlight other than energy consumption is that it also creates a slimmer profile, freeing up space otherwise needed for the backlight and allows for a larger battery, makes it lighter, and could allow for extra room for other components. These are important variables when considering that the wearable industry is driving towards lighter, thinner, and sleeker looking products.
AMOLED benefits include:
- Excellent viewing angles
- True blacks
- High contrast
- Energy efficient
- Narrow bezel
- Thinner profile
- Ideal for mobile and wearable applications
